Dem wot?

I’ve been going through a mild musical revolution the last two months, listening to a lot of funky, tech dubstep and nice deep tech house, and doing loads of shopping on Boomkat. I’ve just been finding so many amazing mixes and tunes around seemingly all at once, that I’ve been overwhelmed a bit to be honest, but it’s definitely a good thing, I think the last time I got this excited about dance music was when I first started DJing out about 3 years ago. But there were twice as many tunes left out on this one than those that got in, so hopefully plenty left over for the next one.
Yea enough chatter and that, basically I’ve just gone from some dubstep which is actually slowed down a fair bit so it becomes more downtempo breaks so I could fit it at the start (those Pangaea tunes are so heavy they both crept in), into some nice beats courtesy of Geeneus, Kode 9 & Hot City, then on to some grooving tech house, before dashing back and forwards between some funky & beats and then off into mini rave territory. Check it out and let me know what you think, I’m pretty happy with it to be honest which is pretty rare for me these days…

James Fox guest mix business

Right, well sorry about being slack last month, did a mix but wasn’t really happy with it so didn’t stick it up, admittedly I’m becoming ever so tight on quality control these days, which can be a harrowing experience when you find yourself tearing your hair out when just one tune doesn’t quite fit.
Luckily towards the back end of the month my good man the ever delectable James Fox appeared with the mix he’s been promising me since forever, luckily it’s been worth the wait.
I’ve listened to the mix just under seven thousand times, but I just couldn’t write any description that would do it justice, but luckily Rick has been a gent enough to do it for me, so here goes…

“hello. my name is rick, and i’m a friend/acquaintance of mr james fox. somewhere below this text you will be able to find and (presumably) ‘download’ his latest ‘mixtape’.
you will no doubt be delighted to know that i have done the hard work and listened to it already, my thought process being that if it was awful i could give you fine people plenty of warning to avoid it like the disgusting swine flu james himself is currently infested with. thankfully the ‘mix’ is not unlistenable, turgid dross, it is in fact an immaculately assembled voyage through the creative cranium of someone who probably has much better taste in music than you.
marvel as he gently squeezes your soft, moisturised hand and leads you through the twin peaks-inspired synth-heavy genius of instra:mental’s ‘futurist’, then on to the giddy chunk of swag’s classic ‘them drums’ before promptly and carefully tossing you to the proverbial lion that is zed bias’ epic saving of premium rate, blow job-haired prodigy hanger-on maxim’s frankly dreadful ‘scheming’. and all this before he’s so much as suggested a brief soujourn into the thunderdome of low-end pressure that is the ‘brilliantly-titled’ uk funky genre, squashing roska and rye rye together like a particularly delicious, particularly urban cake mix, then switching things up once more through the undiluted next level brilliance of musical oddball siriusmo, moniker supremo julio bashmore and all-round many-styles kings baobinga & id.
all that wordy toss aside, the glory of sir fox’s latest mix is thus: by day he may be an ambling, mild-mannered picture of northern gentility, but by night he mutates into a slathering, genre-devouring, still-ambling beast with a ‘mixtape’ that puts most every other offering i’ve heard all year to shame with it’s structure, focus and overall deluge of class. so please, download this mix – james doesn’t have long to live.”

Literally couldn’t have said it better myself. Download it instantly, if anything perhaps try and find a time machine and listen to it yesterday just so by today you could have listened to it five times rather than one.

The Drawing Board

Something maybe a little different to what I would say is the usual house and electro mash up on the podcast this month.
I’ve realised that I have an ever growing collection of really nice tech house records, that I don’t play out that often, and I guess are sometimes lost when you stick them in a mix on their own.
So I decided to just do a mix of just tech house and nothing else, really work on building it with solid tunes and programming rather than sprinkling it with sort of big tunes to get it going. Pretty happy with it actually.
The Loco Dice tune is one of the sexiest things I have heard in ages. And contrary to what everyone else may say about the Hybrid mix, I think the Müller remix of Everything In It’s Right Place is actually the definitive.

Everyone should also go and check out James Fox. He’s been getting support from Laurent Garnier for his upcoming EP on mmii, and biased as I may be, I predict he’s going to have a very very good year.

True Love Lives On Lollipops And Crisps

Yea so I have finally pulled my finger out and done a new mix after god only knows how long. I hope this is the start of me actually doing them regularly as it is actually quite good fun once I get in to it.
I must say it was probably worth the way as I am actually pretty pleased with it. Lovely funky DFA stuff at the start, which is one of my favourite labels at the moment, into some nice tech and electro, with a dash of wonk, with a splash of dubstep at the end. That Piddy Py tune is one of the craziest things I have heard in ages.
Anyway, you know the drill by now, give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Eclectric Summer DJ Competition Mix

I have been away enjoying the summer once again, and frankly couldn’t be assed to do a mix, but am going to get back on the monthly mixes hopefully now the nights are getting dark and boring.
This was a mix originally intended solely for use in a competiton for the good people over at Eclectric, but I felt it was too good to let dissapear into the midsts, so am going to stick it up for your entertainment as well.
It is a bit rough around the edges because I forgot when the deadline was until the day before, so it was thrown together in one attempt rather than a couple of practices.
Yes it is quite short at 45 minutes, but it was a lot of fun to try and get a decent flow in just over 40 minutes rather than the usual 70. Either way, I think it’s a good enough mix to kick the podcast back off with, so get it down you…

One of Many That Got Away…

So finally here it is, a new mix / podcast episode. I know I look slack because I haven’t done one for 4 months, but that’s not entirely the truth, in fact I’ve done at least 5-6 mixes that were supposed to be for the podcast, but I just wasn’t happy with them, and so no one ever heard them. The good news is that I’ve probably got enough decent tunes and ideas now to do another two or three mixes, so hopefully I’ll bash some out soon.
Any how, here is the mix that I finally am happy with.
It starts off pretty mellow with some nice broken beat because I thought I better illustrate the sort of stuff I play in warm up slots (promoters take note, maybe) and then into some nice tech house stuff, through some electro and then finally on to some lovely wonky house, ending one what is probably the best song I’ve heard all year; Florence & The Machine.

Yea So that’s the second time I’ve used Ol’ Dirty right at the end of a mix, but I couldn’t help it. It just fitted so perfectly with that Blackstone tune that it ended up on there anyway.

Fifties – DntFearThReapr

After a small hiatus in the supposedly monthly podcast, we have an exceptionally wicked mix from the delectably beautiful, yet thoroughly talented Fifties.
From easily one of the best up & coming DJs of this year and next, it starts off as lovely deep rolling tech house affair, before picking up the pace about half way through with a smooth wash of electro over the top to create hypnotically dark yet lavishly entertaining mix, all the way through to the stand out (in the best way possible) breaks of False Profit – Pixie Boots into the almost anthemicly beautiful Erol Alkan mix of Hot Chip.
Without a shadow of doubt, this is worth checking out and giving a listen at least once, although I don’t doubt it will be more…

Make sure you check it out, this girl is one to watch for 2008…

Noise Based Entertainment

After months of deliberation (which consisted of scrapping several mixes and lounging in the sun all summer) I’ve finally gotten another episode of the podcast completed, this time mixed by myself.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the last few mixed by Sick Rick and Mambo Dave, which I felt were excellent. But I felt it was time for me to return and show everyone how it should be done (I jest).
This month contains a myriad of genres and tunes, dotting from one place to another in a matter of a few tunes, with the beeps of Oizo’s Air remix, to the low slung guitar driven Funk of New Young Pony Club, with some Sebastianesqe glitch dotted around and some wonky house monsters from Nifty (which is so good I ended up using three tracks from the EP).
Hopefully it’s listenable and everyone enjoys it. More soon come…

Sick Rick – Mamarama

This months podcast mix is from someone I can only describe as a true gent, in my eyes he’s also one of the quickest up and coming DJs on the cicruit, with gigs coming out of his ears at Space and Fabric to name a few, it is of course none other than the man like Sick Rick.
This mix is a true gem, and reminds me somewhat of a young Zabiela’s mixtapes before he discovered Pioneer FX units & CDJs. Definitely worth checking out, and keep an eye on this man.
Also keep an eye on my envy of his ever flowing talent and seemingly immaculate track selection.
I asked him to write me a bit about the mix and that for the site, but he came up with this warble instead, which describes him and his Mum far better than I ever could…

A podcast mix. By me. A memoir.

Hello, my name’s Rick. For a multitude of dull and long-winded reasons I DJ as Sick Rick. You may also know me from my records with the rather hot Alex Metric on Stanton Warriors’ Beats label. Or you may not.
Below is a podcast that was, in fact, never intended to be a podcast. Itâ’s actually a mix I did for my mum a couple of months ago. Her favourite tunes on it are Bushwacka!’s mix of Frankie Valentine and the Zabiela mix of Drink Deep (no shit, she likes em better than the two remixes of mine that are on there).
I tried to smush together as many different styles as I could while keeping a bit of a focus on melody (it is for a bird, after all). There’s a load of old (but still good) stuff on there, and some new bits too, including an exclusive What What What remix of Stanton Warriors’ Seeker track.
I hope you like all of it, really I do.

Download the mix Here

Running Time 01:00:13

01: Asad Rizvi – Duel (Bushwacka! Mix) [Reverberation]
02: Dub Kult – On & On (Guido Schneider Mix) [Raum]
03: Lusine – Near Sight [Ghostly International]
04: Dean Muhsin – Gorgus [CDR]
05: Dave Brennan – Drink Deep (Zabiela Vox Version) [End]
Sample: DJ Buck Pres. Dub Theory – Sound Bwoy [Jah Love]

07: Frankie Valentine – World of What (Bushwacka! Mix) [Sunshine Enterprises]
08: Peace division – Spun Out [Low Pressings]
09: Meat Katie & D Ramirez – Stop The Revolution (Bassbin Twins Mix) [Lot49]
10: Massive Attack – Dissolved Girl (Alex Metric & Sick Rick Mix) [White]
11: Stanton Warriors Feat. Jhelisa – Seeker (What What What Mix) [Punks]

The good news is, that after all this shite that Rick calls a mix, I will be back with a mix myself to show him how it’s done, in the next week or so.
So keep them peeled for that as well.

Meatotomy

It’s nice to be able to say this is episode 5 of the podcast, with more subscribers signing up each month.
I’ve made it my personal goal to make each podcast/promo mix better than the last, last month’s mix lacked a certain amount of depth to it, and didn’t retain a groove as much as the previous, so I’v tried to recapture it this month, and keep to a steady flow up until about halfway through, before opening it up a bit more.
Hopefully that’s evident and everyone enjoy’s listening to it as much as I did recording it.
Constructive feedback is definitely welcome all round…

Thought this is probably as good a place to mention as any, that I’m looking for artists & DJ’s to record exclusive mixes for the podcast. Doesn’t matter how low or high profile you are, if you think you can bring something different to the podcast, then drop me an email.
(I’m not looking for 70 minutes of the breaks, trance or drum and bass anthems, that anyone could find anywhere else, but something that stands out from everything else)
